In February 2004 Eli Lilly and Co. warned doctors that its schizophrenia treatment Zyprexa, dramatically raises the risk of death and stroke in elderly patients suffering from dementia. Approximately 3.5 percent of elderly patients with dementia taking Zyprexa died of all causes, more than twice the death rate of 1.5 percent seen among those taking placebos.
Eli Lilly sold approximately $4.5 billion worth of Zyprexa in 2003.

As well as an increase in cases of stroke and death among the elderly, Zyprexa is known to have the following side effects:
- Risk of aspiration pneumonia and convulsions (seizures) may be increased
- Certain types of breast cancer may be worsened
- Enlarged prostate
- Heart or blood vessel disease
- Agitation, behavior problems
- Uncontrolled movements of lips, tongue, or cheeks
- Unusual or incomplete body or facial movements
