Burn Injury

Burn injuries can be the most painful type of injury that a person can suffer. When a person is burned, nerve endings are damaged, causing intense pain. Each year, millions of American are injured with burns, and thousands die as a result of their injuries. Many more require hospitalization, and long-term rehabilitation and therapy. Burns remain a leading cause of accidental death in the US.

There are many different ways for a person to get burned:

  • Thermal - includes flames, or heat from fire, steam, and hot liquids
  • Chemical - includes various acids, bases, and caustics
  • Electrical - includes electric currents and lightning
  • Light - burns caused by intense lights or ultraviolet lights, including sunlight
  • Radiation - includes burns from nuclear sources

To treat a burn, cool it with water. Apply water to the burned area as soon as you possibly can. Put cool, water soaked clothing on the burn, and if possible, try to avoid icy cold water and ice cubes. Ice can cause further damage to burned skin. Do not apply ointment to the burned area. Applying ointments or greases confine the heat of the burn to the effected area, and do not allow the skin to cool. After the trauma of the burn has had time to cool, it would then be acceptable to put an ointment on the burn to help in the prevention of infecting.
