To treat a burn, cool it with water. Apply water to the burned area as soon as you possibly can. Put cool, water soaked clothing on the burn, and if possible, try to avoid icy cold water and ice cubes. Ice can cause further damage to burned skin. Do not apply ointment to the burned area. Applying ointments or greases confine the heat of the burn to the effected area, and do not allow the skin to cool. After the trauma of the burn has had time to cool, it would then be acceptable to put an ointment on the burn to help in the prevention of infecting. |
